TheEAR Mega Multimedia Speakers Comparison 2003-2004
Klipsch ProMedia Ultra 5.1 VS Creative GigaWorks S750
As many have asked for a A/B comparo and since I have them both as you can all see.I will do a short recap of each strong points and how they compare.Using my usual repertoire of music CD's and DVD's plus a few high bitrate streamed music.
Starting with frequency response,in the lower reaches the larger Klipsch subwoofer beats clearly the GigaWorks as well as the Logitech Z-680.Capable of a true 31.5Hz with power the Ultra 5.1 is the king of multimedia subs.It will however produce very audible port noise at 31.5hz,this only evident with test tones,on music and during movies I never noticed this flaw.
The GigaWorks S750 sub will also play at a good volume down to 31.5Hz,however at matched volume you can hear the sub has lost over 6dB's from the 50hz reference. When corner loaded this lacking can be masked at the expense of bass definition.Cambridge side port starts to breathe even with a 50hz test tone and port noise can be heard there! The Klipsch will only start to show its port 20hz down,at 31.5hz.As is evident the S750 is underported and tuned higher, the Klipsch lower cabionet tuning helps with placement.
As a quick comparo the Z-680 subwoofer also has some energy at 31.5hz,but loves the 50 and 40Hz test tones producing Klipsch Ultra levels, when you compare the Z-680 with the Ultra 5.1 at 31.5Hz the Klipsch sub takes over and never looks back. Also the Logitech Z-680/560 and 2200 subs are tuned too high, this creating a bass peak and causing some people to mistake this for bass POWER.
Second battery of tests were midrange and high frequency tests,as I predicted from listening to music the S700 sats came on top in midrance clarity and lack of coloration as well as upper frequency extension. With test tones and music this was in full evidence.Cambridge voiced the sats well,no edge was present after a four day break in.For Klipsch I have to say the sats dop a great job and the midrange colorations are only a factor at higher SPL and on some specific material. Most will however not notice as these do not get in the way.And the upper frequency extension of Klipsch sats is very good, even smooth a big plus with the loads of EDGY mixes floating around the net. Here I give a slight edge to the GigaWorks S700 sats,as Klipsch smoothness is welcome,do not listen to people who say horns are harsh. Its an urban legend created by people who do not understand how a horn works.Thank you very much
Again the quick Logitech Z-680 comparo,Logitech full range TangBang driver does a very competent job taking care of everything from the mid-bass and up.There is no real lack of upper frequency response, just some resolution loss. The Z-680 sat response will satisfy most PC users, and the midrange is a bit colored, the front port should be eliminated and the cabinet sealed, filled with sound absorbing material.
All three systems come with control pods, the Klipsch pod is as simple as it gets and yet does the job,a very large rotating volume gain and four buttons are all one needs. The pod is on the light side, other than that no complaints,a great design.
Creative's vision is not so great, the pod has five tiny buttons,a load of lights.Volume controls should always remain rotating, not tiny buttons. On a positive side you have what Creative calls H-Port and an input on the pod.Logitech's pod is another great design, large rotating volume knob, clearly labelled buttons and easy to use.
For ease of use I would select the Klipsch pod, simple and effective.
On the product quality side,I think Creative's GigaWorks set is of the ebst quality overall. From the sats passing by the bolt on stands and going to the subwoofer. The only thing the S750 is lacking is clip conectors on the sub/amp plate they stil use PHONO conectors. And the control pod could be more user oriented.
Klipsch could improve the ProMedia cabinets, make them more rigid and taking care of the slight midrange coloration. All else os A ok.Logitech 's Z-680 should use sealed sats and a redesigned sub with lower tuning to take care of the bass coloration.
One question remains who has the best multimedia system, the answer depends on your budget and needs. If money is not an object the Klipsch Ultra 5.1 is tops for games, movies and electronic music. The Creative GigaWorks S700/750 will do a better job is you listen to music in general, all genres welcome. And for the budget minded the Logitech Z-680 is a great sounding and powerful system capable of near Ultra 5.1 levels on movies and in games.
For me,I have them all
And for anyone who thinks or hopes the Cambridge S750 bests the Klipsch Ultra 5.1,in some aspects it does and in others the Klipsch gets the win. Both are very close after all aspects are taken into consideration.
Me when I want to do serious listening only my RF7's/RSW15 or Contour 3.3/Aerial SW12 will do.PC speakers are good as they are today are a long long distance away from full blown home systems. In all aspects
